In Case You Missed the Good News: A Victory for Reproductive Justice in Alabama

This week, we’re taking a moment to celebrate a hard-won victory in the ongoing fight for reproductive justice and bodily autonomy in Alabama. On April 1st, 2025, U.S. District Judge Myron H. Thompson ruled that the state of Alabama cannot criminalize people or organizations who help residents travel out of state to access abortion care.
Let’s be clear, this ruling is a direct rebuke of Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, who had threatened to prosecute those who assisted pregnant people in leaving the state for reproductive healthcare. His threats were rooted in control, not care. But the court made it plain: you cannot punish people for doing what is legal in another state. Period.

The lawsuit, brought by organizations like the Yellowhammer Fund and West Alabama Women’s Center, challenged these threats on constitutional grounds. And they won. The court affirmed what we know to be true: people have the right to move freely, to make decisions about their own bodies, and to support each other in doing so.
At Project Say Something, we approach this moment with clarity: this is a win, but it’s also a reminder. A reminder that the state continues to criminalize care, target organizers, and weaponize the legal system against Black, Brown, poor, and marginalized communities. This ruling is a crack in that system, but we are still in the fight.
This victory aligns with our core belief that Black liberation must include reproductive justice. It’s not enough to simply survive—we demand the right to make choices about our bodies, our families, and our futures, free from surveillance, coercion, and punishment.
So today, we celebrate. And tomorrow, we continue organizing.
