John Merrill

John Harold Merrill (born November 12, 1963) is an American politician serving as the 53rd secretary of state of Alabama since 2015. He served in the Alabama House of Representatives from 2010 through 2014. Merrill is a member of the Republican PartyIn November 2020, Alabama Secretary of State, John Merrill retweeted inappropriate remarks that activists warned were inflammatory and dangerous. These remarks decried a “war on whites”, which is reprehensible enough, but the “when patriots decide it’s time to fight back it’s gonna be uglyIn the wake of of his past sex scandal, during Merrill’s affair he reflected a documented history Anti-Black racism to his mistress. John Merrill’s racist dog whistling retweets reflect his contempt for Black people both in his public and private life.

Ironically, when PSS confronted Merrill in November 2020, he deflected and said “This group, Project Say Something, is well known in Alabama as a liberal racist group that is designed to tear down businesses, tear down individuals and tear down conservative causes that they are opposed to”.

John Merrill has a documented history of aligning himself with reactionary white nationalist movements and clearly demonstrates a pattern of demonizing Black peaceful protests. Alabama has a long standing history of treating marginalized people like degenerates, gaslighting, and enforcing policies that further promote discrimination, violence Anti-Blackness. Merrill’s behavior is pathological, even in his most private and dishonorable moments he still finds time to showcase a paternalistic contempt for the Black community

Project Say Something demands the immediate resignation of John Merrill for his dishonesty and racist dog whistling tactics.
